Caring for Your Skin During Pregnancy: Supporting Your Skin as It Grows

Can we prevent stretch marks during pregnancy?

There are plenty of products and promises out there claiming to prevent or cure stretch marks, but the truth is, there is no magical cream or oil that can guarantee you won't get them.

Some women develop stretch marks during pregnancy and others don't. Genetics, hormones, skin type and how quickly your body changes can all play a part.

What we do know is that as your baby grows, your skin needs to adapt too. The deeper layers of your skin are stretching and changing as your tummy, breasts and other areas of your body grow. For some women, this can result in stretch marks, which can initially appear pink, red, purple or darker than your natural skin tone before gradually becoming lighter over time.

While we can't control everything that happens to our skin during pregnancy, I believe there is something really positive about taking the time to care for it.

Rather than focusing on whether we can completely prevent stretch marks, let's look at some simple ways you can support your skin throughout pregnancy.

1. Nourish your body

Your skin is part of your body, so looking after yourself from the inside matters too.

Aim for a varied, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, protein and healthy fats. Pregnancy is a time when your body has increased nutritional needs, so if you're unsure whether you're getting everything you need, speak with your midwife or healthcare professional.

2. Keep hydrated

Staying hydrated is important throughout pregnancy and can also help support your overall skin health.

Keep a bottle of water nearby and drink regularly throughout the day. Your fluid needs can vary depending on your individual circumstances, the weather and your activity levels, so rather than getting caught up in a particular number, listen to your body.

3. Keep your body moving

Gentle, pregnancy-appropriate movement can be wonderful for your overall wellbeing.

Walking, swimming, pregnancy yoga and other activities that feel comfortable for you can help you stay active and connected with your changing body.

Always follow the advice of your midwife or healthcare professional about what is appropriate for you and your pregnancy.

4. Give your skin some extra care

As your skin stretches and changes, it can feel dry, tight or itchy. This is where a simple daily skincare ritual can be a lovely way to care for yourself.

Applying a nourishing moisturiser or body oil regularly can help keep the skin feeling soft, smooth and hydrated.

And don't underestimate the benefits of taking a few quiet minutes each day to massage your growing tummy, breasts, hips and thighs. It's not just about your skin — it can become a beautiful moment to slow down, connect with your changing body and your growing baby.

5. Choose ingredients that feel good on your changing skin

During pregnancy, you may find that your skin becomes more sensitive than usual, so choosing a gentle, nourishing body oil can be a lovely addition to your routine.

When I created Natures Touch Belly Oil, I wanted it to be something that felt both luxurious and practical — a simple oil that mums could reach for every day as their bodies changed.

Our Belly Oil combines a blend of organic plant oils including olive, apricot, rosehip, evening primrose, jojoba, avocado and coconut oils. It's designed to nourish and moisturise the skin, helping it feel soft and supple as your bump grows.

It isn't a promise that you won't get stretch marks — because no product can honestly make that promise.

Instead, it's about giving your skin some extra love during a time when your body is changing so much.

And for me, that's what pregnancy skincare should really be about.

A little ritual for you

Try applying your Belly Oil after a shower or bath while your skin is still slightly damp.

Warm a small amount between your hands and gently massage it into your tummy, hips, thighs and breasts. Take your time. There doesn't need to be a rush.

You might even turn it into a little daily ritual — a few minutes to pause, breathe and acknowledge everything your body is doing.

Because pregnancy isn't just about growing a baby.

It's about caring for the woman growing them, too.
